The trunk and secondary branches are very solid and are covered in thick blackish-grey bark which makes it quite a sight. The autumn foliage is a rich, dark brown. With its vigorous climbing habit it is a useful plant for covering fences and similar objects or used as a spreading ground cover. Happy Wanderer's leaves are glossy green in colour and the flowers are a vibrant rich violet-mauve in colour. They are borne profusely from Winter to early Spring.
