It’s time to get Bare Rooted for 2026!

2026 SEASON NOW OPEN
Customers please note: Bare Rooted Season has kicked off for 2026 with
Bare Rooted Roses, Fruit Trees and Ornamental Trees
available online and in store. More varieties coming soon.

Winter is one of our our favourite times of year, because while other nurseries slow down, we get geared up for the bare rooted plant season! Keep an eye on this page for updates about this year’s selection of bare rooted plants as they arrive.

JUMP STRAIGHT TO THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BARE ROOTED PLANTS:

FRUIT & NUTS
3 ft STANDARD ROSES

WEEPING TREES

Bare-Rooted Plants, including various fruit and nut tree saplings, are lined up on a wooden surface outdoors, each tagged for identification; a hessian sack and a rural landscape serve as the backdrop.

The bare rooted season is a good time to get discounted fruit trees. Bare rooted fruit trees are easier fit into your car, move into place and plant. This makes it a good time to put in a mini orchard (or a maxi orchard, why not).

In past years we’ve had a range of popular apples, pears, apricots and plums available online and in store by July. These were around half the price that you would buy fruit trees of this size in other seasons.

Note: Pollination & getting the best fruit

Don’t forget that to produce good fruit, or any fruit at all, many fruit trees need to be planted near a different variety of the same type of tree, called a pollinator. More info, including pollination information, is displayed on in the description & details of each product on our website.

Where you see the word “self-pollinating” it means that tree takes care of itself and doesn’t need to be planted near a different variety. However, these self-fertile or self-pollinating varieties do tend to produce better fruit when planted in pairs or near other varieties of the same type of tree.

Five bare-rooted plants with coloured blooms stand upright in a field, labelled as "Bare Root 3 ft Standard Roses." A bundle of bare roots lies on a hessian cloth to the left.

Bare rooted 3 ft standard roses for sale

Bare rooted ROSES are now available online. Click here to view the entire range.

Roses are another top seller during the bare rooted season, as they are available at 25 – 50% off the normal price. For this reason it’s a perfect time to buy your roses or put in a whole rose garden.

This year we will be offering Standard (ball-on-a-stick style) Bare Rooted Roses in dozens of colours. There is a large but limited quantity of each variety, so we suggest you order early to avoid disappointment.

Bare rooted roses are available online and in store NOW!

Five bare-root weeping cherry trees with labelled tags are displayed in a row, with blossoming trees and a blue sky in the background. Text highlights these bare-rooted plants as easy to plant and stunningly beautiful.

The bare rooted season is a fantastic time to get cut price weeping, ornamental and feature trees. Most trees that are deciduous can be bare rooted, and you can expect a saving of 50 to 75%. Favourites from past years include ornamental pears, plums and cherries, plus elms, ashes, robinia, maples and more.

This is a good time to buy trees if you are planning to do an avenue planting along a driveway, create a screen along a fence or property line or if you have a large property where you require bulk trees. Large bare rooted plants are easier to move into place and plant as you don’t have to lug them around with a big heavy pot of soil attached. We also wrap our bare rooted plants and trees with potting mix instead of sawdust, so that you get something useful to mix in with your home soil and improve it a little at the time of planting.

What are bare rooted plants?

Bare rooting is where plants are sold out of a pot, with their roots bare and free of soil. This is made possible by the cool weather and the fact that many plants are semi-dormant in winter and are happy to be moved around and stored out of a pot. You might also hear bare rooted plants referred to as field dug.

We love bare rooting! That’s because bare rooted plants become 25 – 75% cheaper at this time of year, without the associated cost of pots, soil, transport and storage. Check out this article to learn more about bare rooted plants and how to plant them.

When are bare rooted plants for sale in Melbourne?

The bare rooted plant season has come early to Melbourne this year (2024), with bare rooted roses already available online and at our Campbellfield nursery, and now fruiting and ornamental trees starting to roll in.

The exact start of the bare rooted plant season varies slightly from year to year in Melbourne and Victoria, and comes earlier than warmer states such as New South Wales. That’s because it requires a continuous period of cold weather to take the plants into dormancy, ready to be transported without soil.

Usually after the monarch’s Birthday Weekend (King or Queen) in the second week of June is where you’ll start seeing bare rooted plants appearing for sale. The fullest range is available in July. The bare rooted season wraps up when spring arrives, by which time the plants should be tucked up into nice beds of soil, ready to burst into life and get growing with the warmer weather.

Keep an eye on this page for updates about this year’s selection of bare rooted plants and when they are arriving. This includes bare rooted roses, bare rooted trees and bare rooted English Box.

Which plants can I get bare rooted?

Plants that can be bare rooted are mostly deciduous plants that are dormant during the winter time. While they’re “asleep” these plants don’t mind  storage and transportation out of a pot. There are also a few evergreen plants, like the very popular Buxus ‘English Box’, which can be bare rooted.

Our winter 2024 range is listed below. This year so far we have bare rooted roses, some bare rooted fruit trees, bare rooted flowering and ornamental trees available online and in store. More will be added through June and July.

What should I know about buying bare rooted plants?

Chris has been selling bare rooted plants and trees for over 30 years, and when the season comes around he uses them to a customer’s advantage in his garden designs. Here’s a recent video of Chris live on Facebook discussing the history & benefits of bare root plants.

You can also check out our fact sheet on Bare Rooted (Field Dug) plants & trees to learn more about the benefits of using and planting bare rooted plants.

We’ll also be publishing guides on:

Can I get bare rooted plants shipped to me?

We deliver door-to-door in metro Melbourne for $34.90, or free when you spend over $300. We also deliver to many Victorian regional centres. Click here to read about our delivery service and click here to read about our FREE delivery offer!

If you live outside of our regional Victoria delivery routes, or interstate, we can post bare rooted 2ft standard roses and smaller bare root plants to you by Express Post. Please contact us if you want 2ft Standard Bare Rooted Roses posted to you.

Visual Guide

Ornamental Pear Tree Shape-O-Meter

Chris developed this guide to show the natural shape of our most popular varieties. Each form reflects how these trees grow at maturity, based on years of observing established ornamental pears across Melbourne gardens.

Ornamental pear shape q meter.
Eight different tree shapes are shown in a row above labels, ranging from narrow and conical on the left—similar to an ornamental pear tree shape—to broad and rounded on the right.

Important Size Guide

These sizes show the maximum potential under ideal conditions. In most gardens, ornamental pears won’t reach this full size.

They are easy to manage and often kept smaller with a simple annual trim. For example, Capital pears may reach 8–10m, but are typically maintained at around 4m.

Pleaching Guide

Ornamental Pear Tree Shapes for Pleaching

Pleaching is a technique used to create a tall, structured screen while maintaining open space beneath for lower-growing plants. It involves planting a row of trees and training or pruning them into a defined shape. The lower branches are trimmed back to allow for underplanting, making it ideal along fences where it adds height, greenery, and privacy without feeling heavy or enclosed.

Ornamental pear trees are particularly well suited to pleaching. Everscreen is the only evergreen option, retaining its foliage year-round for consistent screening. Manchurian, on the other hand, is deciduous, allowing more light through during the winter months.

Carnivorous Plants That Steal the Show

The plants that bite back.

No horror plant collection would be complete without carnivorous favourites. These fascinating plants don’t rely on fertilisers or rich soil. Instead, they survive by doing something truly unsettling: they catch and digest insects.Carnivorous plants use specialised traps to lure insects with bright colours and sweet scents, snapping shut or sealing prey inside chambers of digestive enzymes in a split second. What makes them truly eerie is their precision — many can detect movement, ignore rain or debris, and even “count” trigger touches before deciding how tightly to close.
Evolved in harsh, nutrient-poor environments, these alien-looking plants behave almost animal-like, making them striking, intelligent, and just a little unsettling. Nature at its most dramatic.

This sale is compatible with our delivery offers, including free Metro Melbourne delivery. For general information on plant delivery see our delivery page.

Air Plants with a Spooky Twist

They’re ideal for desks, shelves, fridges, or gifting, bringing a touch of fun and individuality to any setting.

Spooky Air Plant Facts

  • Live without soil, feeding on air and moisture
  • Absorb water through tiny leaf scales
  • Can appear dormant, then revive
  • Grow clinging to objects, not the ground
  • Thrive where other plants can’t
  • Tough, adaptable, and surprisingly resilient

A Touch of Lucky Charm Bamboo

Calm. Balanced. Lucky.

To balance the eerie with something calm and grounding, the collection also features a timeless indoor favourite celebrated for its symbolism and easy-going nature. LET CHRIS EXPLAIN…

Chris Tutu

🍂 It’s Time To Plant

Right now is one of the best times of year to plant. While many people think spring is ideal,
autumn offers the perfect conditions for strong plant establishment.

The rains begin to arrive, temperatures become milder, and the soil remains warm, creating an excellent
environment for root growth.

When planted now, plants settle into warm soil where evaporation is much lower than in hotter months.
Moisture stays in the ground longer, meaning less frequent watering and faster establishment.

In Victoria, autumn through to Christmas brings gentle conditions that allow plants to quietly
develop strong root systems through autumn and winter.

By spring, these well-established plants are ready to grow vigorously, stronger, healthier, and more resilient.

🌱 Plant Now. Grow Stronger.

💬 A Message from Chris

Hello, Hello!

As one of the highest-turnover retail nurseries in Australia, we have truckloads of fresh plants arriving every single day. Naturally, customers pick the absolute best of the bunch first. This leaves behind the odd plant that might be slightly bent, have a few burnt leaves, a couple of weeds, or is sitting a bit crooked in its pot.

Over time, these plants build up, and we need to clear them out to make way for beautiful new stock. That’s where you win! You’ll find plants that used to be $30 marked down to $6, $12 plants for just $2, and even giant trees originally over $100 going for $20. There are even fruit trees in there for $10!

It’s unbelievable value for those willing to look past a minor imperfection. Come in, find a bargain, and help us clear the decks!

Your 4-Step Guide to the Clearance Zone

1. Follow the Footprints

When you arrive at our front entrance at 1477 Sydney Road, Campbellfield, look down! You’ll see a trail of footprints starting right at the front door. Don’t get distracted by the shiny new arrivals, follow those prints all the way to the very back of the nursery.

Instructional sale sign with four steps: start at entrance, follow green footprints, find coloured tags like “Plants & Trees for £1,” and save big; includes "clearance sale" label and yellow background with rays.

2. Reach the Clearance Zone

The footprints lead to our dedicated Clearance Section. This is where the magic happens. Grab a trolley (or three) and prepare to explore.

Our clearance stock changes constantly, but you can typically find incredible deals on:

  • Feature Trees & Fruit Trees (Great for instant impact on a budget)
  • Hedges & Screening (Perfect for large projects)
  • Native Grasses & Shrubs
  • Flowering Perennials & Succulents

Several potted green shrubs are arranged on the ground at a plant nursery, surrounded by other leafy plants and trees in the background during a Plants Clearance Sale.
Several potted plants with green and red leaves are displayed on a wooden pallet outdoors, perfect for a Plants Clearance Sale.
Several potted flowering plants with white and yellow blooms are displayed on a black plastic tray in a glasshouse, perfect for a Plants Clearance Sale.
Rows of potted green shrubs with upright growth sit close together on a dirt ground, viewed from above—perfect picks for our Plants Clearance Sale.
Various tufts of green and brown ornamental grasses are growing in plastic trays on a black ground cover, with wooden pallets in the background—perfect picks for any garden during our Plants Clearance Sale.
Variegated shrubs with green and yellow leaves are arranged in pots at an outdoor garden centre, ready for the Plants Clearance Sale.
A colourful graphic lists plant types: Borders & Shrubs, Flowering Plants, Native, Climbers, Fruit Tree and Feature Tree, Ornamental Grasses, and Groundcovers. "Clearance Sale" highlights select Plants & Trees for £1.

3. Crack the Colour Code

Every plant in the clearance zone is marked with a specific coloured tag. Forget the price on the pot—the tag colour is the only price that matters:

GREEN TAG

ORANGE TAG
$6
YELLOW TAG

A price guide chart with coloured circles labelled £2 (red), £4 (green), £6 (yellow), £10 (orange), and £20 (blue) on a yellow background, featuring playful footprints, a clearance sale sticker, and Plants & Trees for £1.

4. Load Up and Save

This is a “First In, Best Dressed” event. We do not restock clearance items once they are gone. If you see a $20 Feature Tree or a $2 Groundcover that you love, put it in your trolley immediately!

It’s Time To Plant 🌱

Right now is one of the best times of year to plant. While many people think spring is ideal, autumn offers the perfect conditions for strong plant establishment. The rains begin to arrive, temperatures become milder, and the soil remains warm, creating an excellent environment for root growth.

When planted now, plants settle into warm soil where evaporation is much lower than in the hotter months. This means moisture stays in the ground longer and newly planted plants require less frequent watering. Within days, fresh white roots begin forming as plants respond quickly to these favourable conditions.

In Victoria, the period from autumn through to Christmas is generally gentle, with moderate temperatures and consistent moisture. This allows plants to quietly develop strong root systems through autumn and winter.

By the time spring arrives, these well established plants are ready to grow vigorously. Planting in spring instead gives plants less time to establish before the heat of summer arrives, which can cause stress.

Planting now gives your plants the best possible start, setting them up for strong growth and resilience through the seasons ahead.
