Among the many varieties, Hydrangea macrophylla—often called “mophead” or “bigleaf hydrangea”—is one of the most popular. With its large, rounded flower heads and long-lasting blooms, it creates a striking display from early summer through autumn. These hydrangeas thrive in garden beds, borders, and containers, and are also prized as cut flowers for indoor arrangements.

Pink: Romantic tones that flourish in neutral to alkaline soils.
Blue: Iconic blooms in acidic soils, adding a cool, serene touch.

Winter is one of our our favourite times of year, because while other nurseries slow down, we get geared up for the bare rooted plant season! Keep an eye on this page for updates about this year’s selection of bare rooted plants as they arrive.
JUMP STRAIGHT TO THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BARE ROOTED PLANTS:
Bare rooting is where plants are sold out of a pot, with their roots bare and free of soil. This is made possible by the cool weather and the fact that many plants are semi-dormant in winter and are happy to be moved around and stored out of a pot. You might also hear bare rooted plants referred to as field dug.
The bare rooted plant season has come early to Melbourne this year (2024), with bare rooted roses already available online and at our Campbellfield nursery, and now fruiting and ornamental trees starting to roll in.
The exact start of the bare rooted plant season varies slightly from year to year in Melbourne and Victoria, and comes earlier than warmer states such as New South Wales. That’s because it requires a continuous period of cold weather to take the plants into dormancy, ready to be transported without soil.
Usually after the monarch’s Birthday Weekend (King or Queen) in the second week of June is where you’ll start seeing bare rooted plants appearing for sale. The fullest range is available in July. The bare rooted season wraps up when spring arrives, by which time the plants should be tucked up into nice beds of soil, ready to burst into life and get growing with the warmer weather.
Plants that can be bare rooted are mostly deciduous plants that are dormant during the winter time. While they’re “asleep” these plants don’t mind storage and transportation out of a pot. There are also a few evergreen plants, like the very popular Buxus ‘English Box’, which can be bare rooted.
Our winter 2024 range is listed below. This year so far we have bare rooted roses, some bare rooted fruit trees, bare rooted flowering and ornamental trees available online and in store. More will be added through June and July.
Chris has been selling bare rooted plants and trees for over 30 years, and when the season comes around he uses them to a customer’s advantage in his garden designs. Here’s a recent video of Chris live on Facebook discussing the history & benefits of bare root plants.
You can also check out our fact sheet on Bare Rooted (Field Dug) plants & trees to learn more about the benefits of using and planting bare rooted plants.
If you live outside of our regional Victoria delivery routes, or interstate, we can post bare rooted 2ft standard roses and smaller bare root plants to you by Express Post. Please contact us if you want 2ft Standard Bare Rooted Roses posted to you.
We cannot post 3ft and 4ft roses and trees, because they are too tall. However, we can send bare rooted plants interstate by Freight. Freight costs start at around $300, so this is best for larger orders. Unfortunately, we cannot send any plants to Tasmania, WA or NT due to quarantine restrictions. Call PH: (03) 9359 3331 or Contact Us for more information.
Bare rooted English Box for sale
Coming soon in 2025.
English Box is Melbourne’s favourite small formal hedge, and in the bare rooted season it’s always our top seller! If you want to put in a box hedge, which requires planting about 5 English Box plants per metre, bare rooted season is a great time to do it due to the cost savings per plant.
This year we hope to have some fabulous bare rooted English Box for you very soon, once it’s time for our growers to dig them.
Roses are another top seller during the bare rooted season, as they are available at 25 – 50% off the normal price. For this reason it’s a perfect time to buy your roses or put in a whole rose garden.
This year we will be offering Standard (ball-on-a-stick style) Bare Rooted Roses in dozens of colours. There is a large but limited quantity of each variety, so we suggest you order early to avoid disappointment.
The bare rooted season is a good time to get discounted fruit trees. Bare rooted fruit trees are easier fit into your car, move into place and plant. This makes it a good time to put in a mini orchard (or a maxi orchard, why not).
In past years we’ve had a range of popular apples, pears, apricots and plums available online and in store by July. These were around half the price that you would buy fruit trees of this size in other seasons.
Don’t forget that to produce good fruit, or any fruit at all, many fruit trees need to be planted near a different variety of the same type of tree, called a pollinator. More info, including pollination information, is displayed on in the description & details of each product on our website.
Where you see the word “self-pollinating” it means that tree takes care of itself and doesn’t need to be planted near a different variety. However, these self-fertile or self-pollinating varieties do tend to produce better fruit when planted in pairs or near other varieties of the same type of tree.
Bare rooted ornamental trees & weeping trees for sale
The bare rooted season is a fantastic time to get cut price weeping, ornamental and feature trees. Most trees that are deciduous can be bare rooted, and you can expect a saving of 50 to 75%. Favourites from past years include ornamental pears, plums and cherries, plus elms, ashes, robinia, maples and more.
This is a good time to buy trees if you are planning to do an avenue planting along a driveway, create a screen along a fence or property line or if you have a large property where you require bulk trees. Large bare rooted plants are easier to move into place and plant as you don’t have to lug them around with a big heavy pot of soil attached. We also wrap our bare rooted plants and trees with potting mix instead of sawdust, so that you get something useful to mix in with your home soil and improve it a little at the time of planting.
One of the biggest issues with buying Bare Rooted Standard Roses in a retail environment is that retailers typically don’t have much variety or quantity of stock. So you’re stuck picking between only a few options, and you can only get a couple of the types they do have.
This doesn’t work very well for most people—unless you just want a few roses and they happen to have the specific variety you were looking for.
That’s why we set out to stock the biggest range of Bare Rooted Standard Roses – and offer them at the best prices.
We have a huge selection of different varieties, with plenty of stock in each type of rose, and we’re selling them at incredible prices.
We’ve got fragrant varieties, vividly coloured varieties, low-maintenance varieties – and everything else you can think of! We have almost every colour of rose, so you could practically create a rainbow in your garden. And of course, we have 50–100 of each type of rose in stock.
Sounds pretty fantastic, doesn’t it? And as we mentioned – we also have the best prices!
We figured what we were doing was pretty special, so we called it the Rose Spectacular!
But what if you have specific conditions like poor soil that require a particular type of rose?
What if you’ve got your heart set on a rare variety?
What if you don’t like the colour options a retailer has?
What if you’re creating an entire rose garden and want lots of different colours and types?
We want everyone to be able to get all the Bare Rooted Standard Roses they want in one location – no need to drive around and visit multiple nurseries.
So come into our store and create your own Rose Spectacular in your garden!
4We’re selling our 2ft Bare Rooted Standard Roses for just $14.99, and our 3ft Bare Rooted Standard Roses for $19.99. Even some of the more unusual types – ones you’d normally pay $60–$70 for – are just $19.99 here.

BUT FIRST we want to tell you about the incredible show of Crepe Myrtles we are putting on at Hello Hello.
What we mean by show is creating a display of incredible quality Crepe Myrtles of every size and colour. We love keeping a large stock so that you can get exactly the tree you were after, whether that’s saving money and going small or creating instant impact with a more established tree.
Okay let’s get into why you should get a Crepe Myrtle.
All the Styles
What’s great about having so many different shades to pick from is that it doesn’t really matter what type of garden you have – a Crepe Myrtle will suit it.
Let’s say you have a classic, Hamptons, traditional or green and white garden. Then a white Crepe Myrtle will look fantastic in such a garden!
If you have a cottage, modern and Japanese garden you’re spoilt choice between the different colours. With a modern and Japanese garden take a look at what other plants you have and see what shades would suit them best.
Off the bat, they are just very versatile trees that provide excitement and interest year round.
Right now in summer they have incredible vividly coloured blossoms. You have so much choice with what coloured flowers you want – whether it’s a classic white, soft pink, bright pink, deep red or a striking purple.
Once the blossoms fade you have a brief period of time with lush green foliage and that oriental Japanese Maple-type shape on full display. Then you move swiftly into a riot of fiery colours in autumn, you can’t take your eyes off such a beautiful show.
Now in winter they do lose their leaves, but this is actually not such a bad thing because then that stunning patterned bark is on full display.
See, most trees only have one of those things. Maybe two.
But with a Crepe Myrtle you are getting such a wonderous tree that always looks beautiful.
The Perfect Size
Most people can’t have big trees in their garden, which is not a problem because Crepe Myrtles come in such a variety of sizes. You get to choose what works best for you!
If you have space for a bigger tree, go for a Natchez, Biloxi, Sioux or Tuscarora. They grow to about 6-8 metres tall.
If you’d like a medium sized tree, choose Tonto, Zuni or Lipan. They grow to about 4 to 6 metres tall.
Or if you want it real small you can now get a dwarf Crepe Myrtle called Enduring Summer Red that only grow 1.5 metres wide and tall.
You can even grow Enduring Summer Red in a pot if you have a courtyard garden or a spot on the patio you want some colour.
Anybody Could Grow Them
Because they are such hardy trees, you’ll find them so easy to take care of. They will grow in almost any soil and can take both the heat and the frost.
They can adjust to a wide variety of climates but love hot and dry climates best. Once established they are drought tolerant, and there are some varieties that are even mildew resistant.
So you won’t need to fuss or worry over this tree at all.
How to Take Care of Them
Okay, so we’ve convinced you to get a Crepe Myrtle, here’s how to make sure they thrive.
Something that is good to know about Crepe Myrtles is they love the hot sunny summers. The more heat and sun, the more flowers you get. They also love a bit of fertiliser.
As they get older, they will get bigger and bushier, which can lead to the flowers getting a bit smaller, so it’s important you are pruning them.
Because they flower on their new wood, you can prune them really hard and have a beautiful show of flowers in the summer. Just make sure you are giving them plenty of water and fertiliser.
Want a Bit of Extra Excitement?
We had to take a moment to tell you about the particular variety of Crepe Myrtles called Diamonds in the Dark, a very befitting name for this utterly exquisite type.
This is a Crepe Myrtle that has all the incredible benefits we’ve just discussed but with deep dark purple foliage instead of green. Just take a look at how fantastic those vividly coloured blooms look amongst the dark foliage.
You have the same range of flowers, whether you want white, purple, pink or red, you can have whatever you want.
Candles or wine? A necklace or massage voucher? Shoes or chocolates?
Trying to figure out what to buy someone for Christmas can feel like running a gauntlet, you want it to be something they’ll love but also don’t want to spend an extraordinary amount.
We are very biased, but we actually think plants are one of the best gifts you could give someone.
Our Reasons Why?
First of all they literally last forever (well, as long as your loved one doesn’t kill it).
Secondly, they instantly brighten someone’s space – whether that’s indoors or outdoors. There’s not a single house that isn’t made prettier by having plants.
Thirdly, they help the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.
Fourthly, they can brighten someone’s mood and help reduce stress.
Fifthly, with such a massive range of plants to choose from, there is bound to be something for everyone. Whether it’s a lemon tree for a practical present, or a pretty collection of petunias for the garden, or a small tree that will grow into something big and beautiful.
And the last point is that plants are so affordable! It’s a very inexpensive gift with such a huge range of benefits.
But with there being such a massive range of plants to choose from it can be really hard knowing what to get. So we’ve created a little guide to help match the perfect plant to different situations in your life…
For When You Have a Kris Kringle or Two
There is nothing quite like the struggle of being a Secret Santa, not only are you working with a tight budget but you probably don’t know your person very well.
Oh, how we’ve got the deal for you. Our ‘oopsies’ can be your ‘hurray!’
What happened is we put in the incorrect number for our Petunia Picotee order and accidentally added an extra zero or two. So we have more Petunias than we know what to do with.
We don’t want these to go to landfill so instead we’ve priced them RIDICULOUSLY low.
This CRAZY deal is now available in store or online.
Truly a ‘hurray!’ for you. This is really great if you have quite a few people outside your family that you want to give something small, but thoughtful, too. You can spend the $50 on other presents (or yourself) and then grab a tray of six and give one out to each person (or you can also keep one for yourself).
It’s also great for a Kris Kringle situation where you have a $10 budget to work with – one of these Picotees is only $2! Giving you an extra $8 to grab some chocolate or something.
For The Person Who is Trying to Get More into Cooking
Now of course this does also apply to the person who is already a fan of cooking.
But let’s say your friend or sister has been saying how they want to do more cooking and learn some new recipes. There’s nothing as motivating as growing your own food to push you to cook.
In particular a Dwarf Lemon Tree is the best gift because how easy it is to grow and how versatile lemons are in the kitchen. Plus they make for a beautiful feature.
You can use lemons in cakes, guacamole, cookies, marinade, salads, drinks, the list goes on and on.
For the Person Living in an Apartment
Does the person you have in mind not have a garden? No worries.
We love the miracle invention of pots because it means we can put plants EVERYWHERE. If you wanted to you could practically create a jungle inside, but maybe that’s just us.
Now we have a killer deal right now on Fiddle Leaf Figs – it’s practically daylight robbery. Also practically everyone and their dog wants a Fiddle Leaf Fig.
Now another good option as an indoor plant is a Stephanie Peace Lily. You can get a 10 inch pot for $29.99 and they make for a gorgeous feature in any home.
For the Person Who Just Bought Their First Property
How exciting! This is truly a big achievement that deserves celebration.
Your loved one is probably very overwhelmed. Which means it’s likely they have almost no time for the garden.
Take the stress out of it and book them a Garden Design with us. All Garden Designs are handled by Chris, a nurseryman with decades of experience. With all his expertise he has designed hundreds of gardens, of all budgets and sizes.
For the Person Who is Picky
We’ve all got one (or two). But don’t worry we’ve picked out the plants with universal popularity.
Another classic is a Gardenia Florida– these would look wonderful in any garden no matter the style. Gardenia Florida is an elegant hedge that gets covered with deliciously fragrant white flowers in the springtime.
For the Classy, Elegant Person
You know the type. The one that seems to have it all together – their house is a dream of chic sophistication.
The perfect feature for this person is a Little Gem Magnolia. This tree is evergreen with big white flowers that dot the foliage in the springtime.
Truly a stunning tree, they are guaranteed to love a Little Gem Magnolia.

We hope this has helped in your quest for the perfect Christmas gift for everyone. Now this is a very small snapshot of the MASSIVE range of plants we have.

At Hello Hello Plants, we’re tackling the cost of gardening crisis head-on. While many people are familiar with the cost of living crisis, few realize how much gardening has been impacted. During COVID, as people spent more time at home, they turned to gardening, creating an unprecedented demand for plants. This surge led to plant shortages, and nurseries raised their prices on everything—from plants to potting mix. Despite the economy slowing down, these prices have remained high.
We’ve recognized this issue and have taken action. We’ve partnered with growers to compile a comprehensive list of hundreds of plants, and we’ve managed to bring their prices back to pre-COVID levels. This isn’t just a sale; it’s a movement to make gardening affordable and accessible to everyone. We believe that everyone should be able to create a beautiful garden without breaking the bank, and that’s what we’re committed to.
Not only are our plants affordable, but we’re also offering free delivery on orders over $300, and we don’t just deliver to nearby suburbs. We cover areas as far as Shepparton, Bendigo, Ballarat, and Geelong, ensuring more people can enjoy their dream garden. Plus, we offer free garden design services to help you plan the perfect garden.
When you visit our nursery, you’ll find an incredible selection of plants for just $4.99 and $5.99, including hedges, ground covers, and more. While these plants aren’t listed on our website due to constant updates, you’ll have to stop by to see the amazing variety for yourself.
At Hello Hello Plants, we’re on a mission to combat the cost of gardening crisis and help everyone create a stunning garden.
So here’s some savings passed on to you in our Gardening Crisis Solved SALE:
