Description

Nasturtium officinale

Watercress is an aquatic or semi aquatic herbaceous perennial plant, native to Europe and Asia. This plants botanical name would suggest that it is related to the flower called nasturtiums, but it's actually more closely related to mustard and radish plants. It is one of the oldest known leaf vegetables to be consumed by humans, and not surprising when you look at its nutritional value. This little leafy plant is packed full of iron, calcium, iodine, folic acid, and vitamins A and C. It is also said to have cancer suppressing properties. Watercress has many uses in the kitchen, it can be tossed in salads, put in sandwiches and used as a garnish for a wide range of dishes. Why not throw in a pinch into the blender next time you're making your favourite green smoothie! To grow watercress you need to grow it in full sun to part shade, in moist soil. It requires regular watering and is perfect for growing in pots.
